Station platforms updatedVersion 2.5 posted at: Mon May 21 13:31:27 2012

This pack is the first set of station platforms updated to TS2009+. This is a further extension of the improvements included in the trial version, with a further improved texture and script (including a configurable stopping position). There is also a couple of new versions, with shorter platforms than previously available. As before, they should work in any version from TS2009SP1 upwards.

Station platform update to TS2009+ standardVersion 2 posted at: Sat Feb 18 11:26:33 2012

This is a ground up rebuild to TS09+ standards of the VSR 'bare station platform'. It is Error and Warning free in TS2009, TS2010 and TS12. It has a new mesh, a high res texture with normal mapping, and uses the '.m.tbumpenv' material. It should work in any version from TS2009SP1 upwards.

I would appreciate feedback on this first rebuild. I'd hate to rebuild 20-30 more just like this one, and then discover there's a major problem with it...

These have been built for TRS2004. While they should work in TRS2006, CMP will show both 'warnings' and 'errors' because of the BlueStar tags, which remain for backwards compatibility reasons. Do not try and 'fix' these errors, these tags are included deliberately!

VSR / Railsim.co.uk Signalling Pack, version 1.1.

The long awaited update to the original VSR signalling pack.

Post mounted signals are now available with electrification earth grids on one or both sides, and with offset heads.

Terminating signals are now available in three different head types.

Three different theatre indicators are now included - configured using similar targets to the feathers, and allowing display of a single character (including numbers up to 19), a two digit number up to 99, or two arbitrary characters. All signals are theatre aware and can use the new theatre indicators, including signals previously released in the v1.0 pack.

An update to the previously available banner repeater pack is included.

Finally, a Possession Limit board which acts as both a danger target and a red signal is included - handy for keeping the AI's out of areas you're currently working on.

More recently, EWS run 4 wagon sets on binliner services and Freightliner run pairs of FGAs in amongst other container flats.

Empty and loaded variants are available, the loaded ones use 20', 30' and 40' containers in a randomised pattern. Reskinners: I'm after additional liveries for these containers. A public beta of the scenery versions (i.e. aliasable) are available here, and skin templates are available here.

Sound recording of KestrelNews posted at: Sat Oct 28 21:42:55 2006

The hunt is on for some sound recordings of this beast, from which to make an Enginesound. Given there was only one ever built, and it was last heard by british ears in 1971, this is going to be a challenge. I have found a film of it - but the soundtrack is entirely obliterated with incidental music and commentary, and I can't hear the loco at all - it may not even have been recorded at the time the film was shot. If you happen to have recordings of it, or know where there are some, I would be very interested to hear from you. (My email address isn't here for antispam reasons, but you can contact me via the UKTrainz forum or grab my address out of one of my bits of content - it's in every config file.)

Well, I hear you say, look for similar locos. Sadly, that's hard too. Sulzer only made one V16 diesel engine for rail traction - and this is it. I haven't found a record of another loco with this engine. After Kestrel, Sulzer built marine engines. The marine engine developed from the 16LVA24 is the 16ASV series. Interestingly, the ASV did come to rail for a few years in the early 80s - some SD45s belonging to American railroads ATSF and UP were re-engined with Sulzer 16ASV25/30s in 1980/1981. They didn't last long in service - apparently there were reliability problems. While these rev slower than the 16LVA24 (900rpm versus 1100rpm), they are going to be the closest match if I can't get real 16LVA24 sounds. If anyone has or knows of a recording of a 16ASV powered vehicle, whether on rails or water, I'd be very interested in that too...

Progress on Kestrel's BogiesImage posted at: Wed Oct 18 13:38:12 2006

Thought it was about time I updated this page, so here's a shot of Kestrel's bogie as it looks at the moment. It is a little heavy on the polys at over 7K, but there's not much I can shave out - it seems to be 7K by merit rather than by wastefulness. I guess this is down to Brush putting all the brake rigging on the outside of the frame rather than the inside, and thus coming up with something that looks as complicated as it does.

VSR / Railsim.co.uk Signalling and Directional Speedsign Pack, version 1.0.

At long last, here it is. Version 1.0 of the VSR/Rail-sim Signalling pack.

The initial release contains BR standard post mounted signals in 3 and 4 aspect, on both the Left and Right hand side of the track. Also included are some Southern Railway Reinforced Concrete single post cantilevers, and some BR steel cantlievers based on a design used in the Southern Region, but probably applicable to all diesel or 3rd rail areas.

Also included are a set of BR white/red circular speedboards, for plain line and for diverging routes, to the left, right, or both.

The junction directions (and speedboard diverging routes) are configured by a common system of markers - the signals will learn (in surveyor) which feathers they need, and remember this in a driver session. The markers should be fairly straightforward to figure out - see this thread on the UKTrainz forum for a basic guide. A document on usage will appear here at some point in the future.

The speedboards also read these markers, and will impose speed limits as appropriate.

As usual, nothing is as simple as it looks to start with.

So there was only one of them? Can't be any detail differences then, right? Wrong....

There are many things that appear to have been modified during Kestrel's short life on BR.

In particular, the two small raised pieces in the centre of the roof (above the small grilles) appear to have been removed some time later on. They are present in a photo I have of Kestrel in freight service, but absent in a photo I have of it in ECML passenger service (with the later bogies).

The small grilles themselves have seen at least two different arrangements too...

This is a significant update to the profile of the track - the rails are all to the correct size, shape and alignment now. There's also been some tweaking done on the textures.

The extra pack contains some new textures to represent bad condition tracks - rusty rails and overgrown trackbeds. There will be some more like this, though some of them will need a meshedit to remove various rails.

Talking of meshedits, I should have some SR 3rd rail track with boards for use in sidings sometime soon. And transition pieces are on the cards too, allowing for smooth changes between track types.

New in this version are accurate dimension rails - this improves the look of the track significantly over the last version.

No end ramps included in this pack - I think I'm going to change the method of constructing the ramps - now they are the correct length, the fact that they don't follow the grade or curve of the track is noticable.

The VSR Tunnel Catenary pack.

Reduced Height catenary to fit the 'S' and 'D' tunnels in the AJS Tunnel kit.

This matches the style of the UK catenary included with TRS in the "Third Party UK" region, contributed by Alan Thompson.

While these objects have been designed to match the style of Alan Thompson's catenary, and to be used in conjunction with it, it is not derived from Alan Thompson's model in any way - it is built completely from scratch.

I have added a surveyor-only tag to platform 1, so you know which way round they are when placing them. There is also one extra station since the last beta - a two track station plus bay platform, with a taper at the platform end.

Feel free to have a look at this, learn from it, tell me where I've gone wrong, or how I can improve it, etc. If you pinch bits out of it for your own models, that's OK, but please credit me for my work in your documentation.

APT-P in the worksNews posted at: Wed May 19 21:28:05 2004

I've been playing around with the idea of building the APT-P for a while. I set down the bodyshell for the NDM in GMAX about christmas time, and diligently ignored it for a while.

It didn't take long to grow a veritable forest of insulators on it's roof, but not a lot else happened for quite some time.

Recently I've picked it back up, and I'm stuck in to the driving bogey, which is coming on a treat. Well, assuming you don't park it next to Pikka's 37 that is. That'd just be cruel.

I'll post some screenshots in a day or two once I've got a bit more of the inside of the bogey filled in, and show you how I'm getting on. It looks a little odd at the moment, as I've started with the most visible details and I'm working my way in, and there doesn't appear to be anything holding it together at the moment...

UK Limited Clearance signs. Use this where there is limited clearance between a structure and the track - not enough for a trackworker to stand clear. Commonly found on bridge abutments and along retaining walls. Also includes a sign with post for viaduct railings where it is not possible to put the sign directly on to the structure.

v1.2 adds the blue 'No Refuges' variant, for when there is limited clearance on only one side of the line, the other side of the track has sufficient clearance, and thus no refuge points have been provided on the side with tight clearances.

Note to all those who downloaded the 1.0 release, Sorry, but I didn't pay enough attention to the config on that one - it has a KUID clash with one of the 3rd rail ends. You will need to remove the folder "KUID 60850 23000" from the dispatcher/downloads folder by hand - and if you were using the 3rd rail pack, reinstall that.

Standard and SR 3rd rail electrified track now available!News posted at: Sun Feb 29 09:05:49 2004

The standard (non-electrified) and SR 3rd rail electrified track packs are now available for download.

These packs will overwrite the more recent beta releases, and obsolete the older ones, so layouts laid with old beta releases should be automatically updated by Trainz.

I need to make the correct rail ends for the LU 4th rail electrified pack, so this has not yet been released.

Although all the assets in these packs are compatible right back to SP3, I have been informed that the package itself is not. I intend to repack the track with SP3's content dispatcher - if you do not have TRS2004, you won't be able to unpack the package until I do this.

I'll also be uploading to the Auran Download Station once I've repacked the packs with the SP3 content dispatcher - though the Download Station will split the three packs into over a hundred little files, so I honestly can't recommend that anyone actually does download from there.
